To shift gears from work mode into romance mode, begin by simply realising where you are. Place your hands just below the rib cage (where your third chakra is) and breathe for a moment. 

Acknowledge how it feels to operate from this centre. Then to move out of that mindset and into a more romantic mood, shift your attention to the area below your navel (second chakra), where your emotions and sexuality reveal themselves.

If you visit an upscale day spa, you might notice a “chakra balancing” treatment on the list of services.

You may not be sure what your chakras were, or if they needed balancing, but it’s definitely intriguing! 

Maybe you have even had your chakras dowsed with a pendulum. 

Watching a crystal spin above your heart area is interesting, and it’s not just a party trick. 

I have hands-on experience. Allow me to give you a little insight before you slap down the cash for a treatment that you don’t really know if you need. 

Your chakra system comprises seven main energy centres that live along the spinal column. 

Although they are less dense than tissue or bone, they are one of the major ways that your body receives energy from the Universal Energy Field and assimilates it for your use. 

The energy centres govern many aspects of your physiology, including organ systems and psychological tendencies, and reflect the well-being of the individual. 

Each has a frequency, a colour and a sound, moving in a clockwise direction. 

I know it’s weird to understand the nonphysical parts of you, so think of each chakra like a vortex or funnel, which is a few inches wide at the top, and the motion of this vortex pulls energy down the funnel and into the body. 

There is a front and rear aspect for each chakra, and they extend into your energy field a few inches above the body on certain points along the spinal column. 

Myth #1 - Chakras are supposed to be balanced and perfect


Many of the diagrams in books or online show the seven major chakras as they would be in an ideal world - perfect. 

They are all a similar shape, size and spin effortlessly with a colourful glow specific to each chakra. 

We live in the real world and hopefully understand that nothing is perfect. 

The real world is messy, unpredictable and above all else, constantly changing. 

This is also how your chakras behave. They are flexible and responsive, adjusting to psychological and physical factors, which affect us every day. 

Your chakras have a baseline unique to you and reflects your current emotional and physical patterns, but this baseline can change over time as you grow and change. 

Insisting that your chakras always be “perfect” is not productive in the real world. It’s important to honour where you are in your process and to encourage opening and stability, no matter how you measure up to a diagram or picture in a book. 

You are not a picture. 

When you are on a healing table and a practitioner balances your chakras, he or she is imposing a mental ideal on your very real physiology. 

They may not be respecting where you are in your process and might force your chakras to be more open than they are naturally capable of in that moment. 

After the treatment, your chakra system probably won’t be able to integrate and hold the work that they tried to impose on you. 

Your chakras will go back to where they were before the treatment and may be a little wonky for a bit. 

Myth #2 - Balancing my chakras will improve my health


It might be easy to think if my chakra system affects my organs, then I will be healthier if my chakras are perfect. 

Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. The chakras are evidence of where you are physically, emotionally and psychologically, and it is only by working on those issues that your chakras will shift and change. 

Believe me, if there were a magic switch that could make you perfect, I’d turn it on for you, but true healing requires a shift in consciousness. 

Yeah, I said it. Be intimately involved in your own healing process to reap the rewards. 

No one can do it for you. When you experience illness, it is your body calling out for you to pay attention. 

Honour it. Listen to it. The answers you need for your healing will come through your consciousness, not just your chakras. 

Get to know yourself, and you’ll move through your own health issues, rather than giving that job to someone else. 

Myth #3 - I have no power over my chakras. 


Most people think they have no real authority over their physiology. We are constantly turning to experts to tell us what is wrong with us and how to fix it. 

While there is much that a healer can do to help you understand where you are and to help you along the way, it is up to you to change the beliefs that are negatively affecting you. 

There are lots of simple exercises, similar to many common yoga postures, which people have used for centuries to shift the psychological or physiological health of an area governed by a chakra. 

Sometimes all it takes to shift a negative or unhealthy pattern is just giving it some positive attention and a concerted effort to move toward something healthier. 

For instance, if you are experiencing a sluggish second chakra and not feeling that romantic spark toward your partner, having that chakra balanced will have some effect on your love life, but not as much as if you practise something like belly dancing. 

Get that part of the body moving for yourself and your chakras will respond in kind. 

Another person can’t change your life for you, especially if you have invested behaviours and beliefs in a particular issue for many years. 

Actively working with your issues, however, will positively reflect in your entire chakra system, and you will feel better on many levels.

Eventually you want to control and focus your thoughts at will, but this begins with noticing the predominating thoughts in your mind. 

For the first five days, set aside 15 to 20 minutes a day to sit with your legs crossed on the ground and just pay attention to the thoughts that randomly come into your mind. 

Don’t try to change them or force them in any direction. 

Don’t analyse them and don’t think about whether you should be thinking of them. 

Again, this is an exercise in raising your awareness of your thought process. 

As you are doing this, keep your eyes closed and make sure you have nothing distracting you during the 15 or 20 minutes. 

At the end of the five days, move immediately to this next step: 

Days 6-15: Inducing the Trance State


For days 6 to 15, you will practise keeping your mind and body in what’s called the “hypnagogic state,” which is the deep meditative state between sleeping and dreaming. 

Lie down flat on your back somewhere comfortable and bend your arms at the elbows so that your forearms are at a 90-degree angle to your torso. 

This way, as soon as you doze off to sleep, your arms will fall and awaken you, keeping you suspended in the hypnagogic state. 

As you are doing this, pay attention to when your body is about to fall asleep, because the goal of meditation is to put yourself in this state and stay there at will. 

You’ll also find that random thoughts will come into your mind during this time; again, don’t worry about those just yet. 

During these 10 days, you’ll be learning how to suspend yourself between sleeping and dreaming. 

You might also experience “sleep paralysis” around the end of these 10 days. 

Sleep paralysis can be scary and sometimes accompanied by hallucinations ... just know that this is normal and don’t be afraid of it. 

Days 16-25: Thought Maintenance 


Some Buddhist monks refer to thought maintenance as “tending the garden of your mind.” 

What you will do is start acknowledging the random thoughts that are popping into your head by addressing them out loud. 

For example: “I am thinking about what I had for lunch.” “I am thinking about a blue sports car.” “I am thinking about what happened today at work.” “I am thinking about my dog barking.” 

What you’ll notice is that after enough practice doing this, acknowledging your thoughts will cause them to disappear from your consciousness. 

As soon as a new one comes, address it and wait patiently for the next one. 

Days 26-30: Deep Meditation 


During the last five days, you ought to notice a stillness in your thoughts and a peace within your mind and body. 

Remaining within this state for your entire meditation time will help you reap the benefits of meditation. 

If you notice thoughts coming into your head, go address them as you did during days 16 to 25, and eventually your mind will become still. 

TIP: Once your 30 days are up, make it a lifetime practice to meditate for 15 to 30 minutes a day.

While some may think alternative beliefs go against a Christian belief system, the reality of it is that one has nothing to do with the other.

Alternative beliefs and alternative medicine do not compete against Christianity; they are merely an alternative way of thinking.

There is some confusion amongst Christians with traditional versus alternative beliefs, and this confusion may prevent Christians from exploring other ways of thinking.

While therapies like acupuncture may have originated in Taoism philosophy, many modern-day medicines have their roots in non-Christian beliefs.

For example, numerology readings and Christianity are not necessarily mutually exclusive.  Many traditional medicines originated in ancient Greek and Roman cultures, which were actually just as non-Christian as Taoism.

The idea that just because something did not originate in Christianity and that it is inherently wrong is just not biblically supportable. Christians use many technologies and inventions that were based on non-Christian systems, but that does not mean that they do not maintain a strong faith.

You Are Free to Choose


Christians can explore alternative therapies and alternative beliefs as they choose and still maintain their strong sense of faith. There is a fine line between what is actually considered an alternative belief and what is not, so it is not fair to say that Christians cannot explore some of these.

Some people might consider chiropractic care alternative medicine, while others do not. Does this mean that a Christian cannot visit a chiropractor?

I hope not because the chiropractic field does good work and helps people who suffer from ailments like chronic pain. The belief system of the inventor or originator should not be a deciding factor as to if someone chooses an alternative therapy or not.

The deciding factor should, in fact, be one's health. Some might consider a gluten-free diet an alternative therapy, but if someone is allergic to gluten and just happens to be a Christian, does that mean he or she cannot visit an alternative provider and seek care?

I should hope not. What if a Christian wants to visit an herbalist or a naturopath or seek an opinion from an Ayurvedic physician?

They should have the same rights as anyone else, and they should be able to seek the treatment they want from a caring alternative provider. 

Therapies such as reiki and massage therapy have been around for hundreds of years, and they have helped many people in countless ways. The ultimate deciding factor should be someone's health, not someone's faith.

Complete Mind and Body


What about mind-body exercises such as yoga and tai-chi? Should Christians refrain from those as well? I would be concerned if they did because yoga and tai-chi are incredible forms of exercise that help people.

Research has shown that tai chi may have some health benefits, as some studies show favourable effects on balance control, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness.

Studies also show that tai-chi may reduce the risk of falls in elderly patients and those recovering from heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure and even multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's.

Tai-chi may also be beneficial for stress relief and mental health with one study showing that regular practice increased psychological well-being and reduced stress, depression and anxiety while also enhancing mood.

Yoga has been around for over 5,000 years. Most Westernised yoga classes focus on things like physical poses, also known as asanas. There are many styles and types of yoga available today.

Most forms of yoga include some breathing techniques and possibly even some kind of meditative technique. While some forms of yoga focus purely on relaxation, others focus on things like core strength, muscle toning, balance and flexibility, all of which Christians and other believers alike could benefit from.

Typically yoga involves positioning, stretching and strengthening of the body and the mind, and yoga is an incredible stress-reducing exercise. Yoga is not only for strengthening the physical body, but it may also focus on a meditative benefit for the mind and spirit.

Yoga might also be helpful in decreasing depression, anxiety, insomnia and pain, things all of us could use some help with from time to time.

Who Can Realistically Say They Have All The Answers?


Although it comes down to an individual choice, Christians should not feel like they are betraying their faith when they explore an alternative method.

Modern medicine does not have all the answers, and there are many reasons people seek alternative providers.

I don't believe it would offend Jesus if one of his disciples wanted to try a massage or seek an alternative method for chronic pain, just because they were Christian.

Just as the church and the school are separate entities, so should the church and medicine; whether that medicine is traditional or alternative should not matter.

Christians should feel very comfortable seeking any alternative treatment they wish to try because no one is asking them to give up their faith.

I believe there is room for everyone at the alternative table, and we can all learn something from one another.

Each of us should feel free to explore any method that we wish to explore in pursuit of our optimal health and wellness.

I believe Jesus and most Christians would agree.
