When the 3 pm hunger pangs begin, what snacks do you reach for? Most office break rooms are full of less than healthy options for a mid day pick me up, and most of us are guilty of grabbing a cookie or a doughnut to curb afternoon hunger.

Instead, be sure to have healthier alternatives on hand for when hunger strikes. Bring pre-packaged real food, like vegetables with hummus, apple slices with peanut butter, or crackers with cheese.

These small servings make an excellent snack and will keep you from making a stop at the vending machine. Don't forget to pack a water bottle as well. Refilling your coffee cup multiple times can lead to becoming dehydrated and will cause you to be more hungry during the day.

Make leaving the office on time a priority. Finish what you can during the day, leave those tasks that can wait until tomorrow, and get home to rest and relax before heading back in the next morning.

Habit #1: Successful people cultivate complete clarity

Successful people know that you need to be 100% clear about what you want, you require laser sharp focus. They know their goals can’t be woolly, as without clear unambiguous goals in your head you can never move in the right direction.

Without clarity you will get off to the wrong start which will delay your progress.
So find out what it is you really want. Often what we think we truly want isn’t actually what we want. Sometimes it might take some deep reflection and time to ascertain our true desires.

What is important is you decide what your true goals are and go for them full throttle. Successful people are decisive and make sure they have complete clarity before taking action. This is one of the most important habits of successful people.

Habit #2: Successful people cultivate courage

Successful people are courageous. Once they know what they want they have the bravery to go for it 100%. Successful people fearlessly throw themselves in head first into all that they do.

If they don’t think they have the skill, they take the time to learn it! All of us learnt to walk and talk when we were young, we didn’t know how to do it when we came into the world.

But after a bit of trial and error we made huge ground from nothing. You probably take it for granted now that you can walk, talk and express yourself to others. Originally you didn't have any idea how to do that! It’s the same learning any new skill: we learn by trying and experiencing.

Don't be afraid to make mistakes, you'll gain valuable insights from them. All it takes is a little courage to actually begin anything!

Habit #3: Successful people use their creativity

I really hate it when people tell me they are not creative. I think some people mistake the concept of creativity for just the field of great works of art, literature or music. These are magnificent creations requiring perseverance and skill no less.

However, all humans are naturally creative, and successful people tune into this naturally. We humans anticipate and improvise as we go a long, it's how we navigate the world. We do it all the time. Our potential is unlimited if we only fully believed it!

Successful people already know this and use creativity when they come up against obstacles along their way. They think: if that doesn't work, we'll try it a different way. Is someone or something blocking us? OK we'll come up with a new way of getting around that, find a solution or take a different negotiating position. You get the idea...

To boil it down, successful people will first have concrete, clear cut ideas, have the courage to put them into action and use their creativity to make them happen.

After all, they hold the keys to things like positive performance reviews and can greatly impact your ability to advance or get that promotion.

Yet, they aren’t just the gatekeeper for getting ahead; keeping your job could also require talking with your boss in a clear, concise manner that is truly heard.

While you probably already know the necessity of having good communication skills, actually being able to get through to your boss may be easier said than done.

Here are 10 ways to improve your communication with your boss that truly work:

Tip #1: Be Prepared

If you’re not a natural communicator, then going in to speak with your boss unprepared is a poor strategy. You’ll likely be too wordy, have trouble getting to the point or lose your train of thought.
All of these common blunders make it difficult for your boss to pay attention.

They are almost certainly busy with a thousand different tasks to get done; the last thing they want is to feel like you’re wasting their time.

Try to think of your speech as if it’s just the highlights, where you only cover the most important points quickly. Not only will your boss be more likely to listen to a shorter speech, they’ll probably remember what you said much better as well.

Tip #2: Be Specific

Generalities are your enemy when trying to hammer home an idea, proposal, defence of your actions, vision for the future or whatever else you’re trying to effectively convey to your boss.

This is the time to get specific, narrowing everything you’re going to say down to a few well-considered points. Going hand-in-hand with the advice to hit just the highlights, this tip ensures that those highlights actually have something to do with your point.

Tip #3: Keep Your Emotions In Check

Blubbering like a child probably isn’t a good way to make your boss hear you, especially if they aren’t a touchy-feely type of person.

While sharing your emotions and struggles can actually bring you closer together and help them see things from your point of view. breaking down should be a very rare occurrence (if at all). Why?
Everyone has issues that they have to deal with, but most don’t burden their boss with these feelings.

Most of the time your emotional display will be unwelcome and uncomfortable, unless you and your boss already have a good relationship.

So, to get the best results, try to speak with your boss when you’re composed and in control.

Tip #4: Be Accountable

If that project you’ve been working on is under-performing, don’t make ten different excuses as to why it’s not your fault. Take ownership of your failings, look your boss in the eye and tell them how you plan to learn from this setback and adapt to overcome in the future.

This can go a long way towards instilling trust in your ability to get back on track, and will probably go over much better than trying to explain everything away.

Tip #5: Speak in Actionable Terms

Saying that “you’d love to be considered for the upcoming project” is good, and it does show initiative. Yet, to really take your communication to the next level, try using language that’s actionable and measurable instead.

For example, say “I’d love to go over 3 reasons why I’m the best candidate for the project with you on Friday.” How is this better?

You’ve given your boss measurable terms and a clear idea of the next step. They’ll know that you plan to speak with them on a specific day with a specific topic in mind. This is superior to a much more general statement, which has no clearly defined concept of what’s coming next.

People tend to fall into this way of speaking a great deal, and not just at work. A good example of the difference is found in a typical New Year’s resolution. If you say that you’d like to lose weight this year, that sounds good, but it includes no plan of action to back it up.

However, if your resolution is to visit the gym 3 times a week for 30 minutes for the next year, this has a clear and measurable outcome. Which of these resolutions do you think will be more effective?

Tip #6: Be an Active Listener

All too often people just tune out when someone else is speaking, even their boss. They are simply waiting for their turn to speak again, and this is a poor way to build rapport.

Force yourself to be in the moment, actively listening to what your boss has to say. Not only will this give you fodder to ask intelligent questions and keep the conversation moving smoothly forward, your boss will be able to pick up on your undivided attention.

No one likes being ignored, and actually listening to your boss will make them much more inclined to listen to you.

Tip #7: Convey the Right Message

Communication isn’t only performed with your words - your body language and posture also send a message. Don’t cross your arms and lean away from your boss, look down at the ground often or hunch your shoulders.

These can either convey an attitude of defiance, resistance or poor self-esteem and weak belief in what you are saying. Instead, it's important to sit up straight and look your boss in the eye, and even lean forward a bit as if you’re anticipating the exciting things they have to tell you.

The right body language is a big part of an engaging conversation, so don’t neglect this piece of the puzzle.

Tip #8: Be Perceptive

What does being perceptive mean? Your boss is human too, and they aren’t immune to having a bad day or a fight at home. Try to determine their mood before jumping into your pitch or whatever else you have to say.

If it’s important that your conversation goes well, don’t pick a day when your chances are less than stellar. Bide your time and wait until your boss is in a good mood before you bend their ear - chances are your patience will be rewarded.

Tip #9: Be Persistent

This isn’t advice to annoy your boss, asking them for an answer to your query every time that you see the whites of their eyes. Instead, don’t be like far too many employees, who might drum up the courage to speak with their boss once but then don’t try again or stick with it.

This type of behaviour is quite common when asking for a pay raise, for example. Or, an employee may only speak with their boss when he or she initiates the conversation.

Don’t make your boss track you down. Touch base with them again about your discussion a day or two later if the situation warrants a follow-up.

Tip #10: Be Consistent

Perhaps the best advice is that waiting to speak with your boss only when you need something isn’t a wise choice. Keep lines of communication open with them at all times, volunteering brief but regular updates about work-related projects.

You can also quickly inquire about their kids, favourite sports team, hobbies or whatever else you know they like talking about. Just keeping a regular back and forth going can do wonders for your work relationship.

It also lets your boss know that you don’t only speak to them when you need something - making it easier to talk to them when you do.

This is whereby you choose to stick to a relationship even if things are not working out, or you choose to stick to your job even if you are being mistreated or abused because you fear that if you move on you might never find another job or another spouse.

It is normal to fear what the future holds, but never let this hold you back. Happy is the man who travels the path less trodden.

3. You don’t take care of yourself

Sometimes life leads us to focus too much on taking care of others. For example, if your spouse or a close family member is suffering from a long-term illness, if you take care of children or elderly relatives or you just seem to never put yourself first.

As a result, we might get absorbed too much into taking care of others that we forget to take care of ourselves and be happy. In the end, all the exhaustion and neglect will start reflecting in our mood swings.

Learn to take care of yourself before you can care for others.

4. You try too hard to please everyone

You might be having a self-identity crisis where you are still trying to find yourself. In most cases, this leads to imitations and trying too hard to please everyone. In the end, you will come to the realisation that you can never please everyone and what you are doing is hurting those who are close to you (including yourself).

You can never please everyone. Different people have different preferences. Never be afraid to be you, and the right people will come your way and stay.

5. You are in your comfort zone

When was the last time you tried something new? When did you go to a new restaurant or try out a new recipe? When did you ever take a risk? Maybe the reason why you are not at peace with yourself is simply that your life is boring and you are used to following the same routine daily.

You are so predictable to the extent that everyone around you knows your next move. If you want to be happy get yourself out there and go to a party or take a vacation to a random destination or if you're single, throw caution to the wind and go on a date.

Dye your hair a crazy colour or better yet get a full makeover. It doesn't matter what it is just do whatever takes your fancy. Excitement always comes with the element of surprise. Write a bucket list and start trying out everything on it.

6. You aim for perfection so can't be happy

Nobody is perfect. And nobody will ever be. Aiming for perfection is setting up yourself for failure. Accept that all you can give is your best shot - and that's OK.

On the other hand, do not expect others to be perfect. Because if you keep searching for the perfect spouse, the perfect friend or the perfect employee, you will end up disappointed.

In whatever you do, give it your best shot and do not be so anxious that no matter the outcome, you will be happy that you did your best.

7. You take things too personally

When you are over-sensitive and take things too personally, you are piling up negative energy which in turn will leave you feeling like you are not at peace with yourself.

Learn to take things lightly. Never hold grudges and learn to forgive quickly (including yourself).

8. You eat too much junk

Various studies have proven that junk food contains too much sugar and carbohydrates. This combination always leads to a sugar crash, and the result is emotional deflation.

A good recommendation would be to eat more foods rich in nutrients and drinking plenty of water on a regular basis. This will boost your energy levels and in turn give you an emotional uplift. Eating junk food is not totally forbidden but should be done in moderation.

9. You don’t exercise regularly

Sitting around the house doing nothing can lead to a disruption of your blood circulation. This is the perfect recipe for a dull day and a restless you.

When you exercise, you boost your blood circulation, especially to your brain. Your body also releases endorphins and oxytocin (AKA The Hormone of Love).

These hormones are responsible for making you feel happy and refreshed. Feeling bored? How about hitting the gym for a while or going for a swim? (Thank me later :)).

10. You spend too much time indoors

There is always some relief that comes with breathing in fresh air and floating in the ambiance of a perfect outdoor breeze. Spending too much time indoors can be depressing because your world revolves around the same tiny space.

  • Start this technique as the previous two but this time you are in a large empty room with only a box in the middle
  • Visualise yourself walking towards the box, open it and find it empty
  • Slowly start placing items into the box that are of no use to you
The items you place inside represent everything that is hindering you from becoming who you can truly be. Everything from fear of failure, worries about the future, rejection, anger and every negative aspect in your life.
  • As you place each item in the box, feel yourself getting lighter
  • Continue doing this until you have filled the box entirely and you have no worries left

I understand that if you're suffering from low self esteem this might seem difficult but just give it a shot, even if it's just to make a start.

You can ask someone who's close to you to tell you, if you're feeling you can't do it or are finding it hard to come up with positives.

You'll be surprised what positives others see in you that you don't realise! Write them down and keep them close to you so you can refer back to them whenever you need.

2. Get out of your comfort zone.

Again this might seem impossible to do if you have low self esteem but try to forget about that - take small steps. Join a club, take up a new hobby or try a new sport - it will expand your social circle at the very least.

Or try something different to your normal routine, perhaps visit a museum or local tourist attraction you've never been to. It will give you new insights and raise your spirits. It will also give you some time that is just for you.

3. Having good self-esteem and a strong self-image originates from within

Your self esteem can't fully be influenced by what goes on around you so ask if there are things about the way you think (and therefore behave) that are causing these negative feelings.

Have a quiet moment of reflection and examine your thoughts and feelings and see if these are the kinds of things that are affecting your self esteem.

4. Forget blaming everyone else for how you feel

Blaming people is the best way to shift power onto other individuals, it's such a powerless situation you put yourself in.

It can feel satisfyingly self-righteous!

However, refusal to forgive and harbouring bitter resentment will only do more harm than good, especially in the long term.

I’ve borne grudges and refused to forgive in the past myself, but it came at considerable personal cost and caused me unnecessary agony.

Fortunately, I have learnt that forgiveness is crucial to well-being and happiness.

It helps you reach a level of understanding with every person who has done you wrong and, ironically, yourself.

What is Forgiveness?

Forgiveness is the conscious act of recognising that someone has perpetrated a wrongful act against you, acknowledging the pain it has brought, and letting go of the anger and resentment that the act has produced.

Forgiveness is a conscious, voluntary act that you commit to do so that you can resume living a life of peace and happiness, free from negativity.

Forgiveness benefits both the offender and the receiver.

It releases the wrongdoer from any fear of retaliation from the offended person, but it helps the latter more.


Forgiveness allows a person to replace hatred with peace, understanding, and happiness.

States of being difficult to achieve when you burden yourself with negativity and feelings of ill-will towards another person.

 Positive Intentions and the Light Switch Method

The first step in forgiveness is to focus on the intention, which is what you wish for the person who hurt you.

It must be a positive aspiration, such as a hope that he or she will learn from the experience or that he or she will find peace and solace.

The next step is guarding your heart against anger and resentment. It is common to feel anger towards the person, even if you have made the conscious decision to forgive.

Protect your heart against anger using the light switch method.

This is visualising turning a light switch on when you felt angry and resentful to remind yourself to focus on the positive attributes of the person or what he or she has taught you through this experience.

Importance of Gratitude

Gratitude plays an important role in learning to forgive. Start by being grateful for the lessons learned from the experience and positive changes that the person has brought to your life, whether they relate to the offending circumstance or not.

You can also be grateful for the opportunity and ability to forgive, and the freedom from the hatred and resentment that could otherwise poison your life and your relationships.

Forgiveness is not a single-step process that instantly results in a changed mindset about a particular person or an offending circumstance, but ironically, being grateful for the experience and the lesson it teaches you, is remarkably liberating.

What Forgiveness Is Not

Forgiveness is not synonymous with resuming the same relationship that you had with the offending person.

If a spouse cheats on their partner, forgiveness does not automatically mean reconciliation.

Wrong and hurtful acts have consequences, and among these are altered relationships and people who are wiser about whom to trust.

This means even if you have forgiven someone, you still have a choice whether to let him or her back in your life.

Forgiveness is difficult to do, but to give yourself peace and happiness, you must learn to forgive. It is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

By making this conscious decision, practising gratitude and acknowledging that you can choose peace and graciousness instead of resentment and revenge, you not only free the offending person, you free yourself.
