It’s going to wealthy people. 

It’s going to the people who have money because they love to invest and to make money more than they love to spend it. 

That’s the difference in how wealthy people spend money and how broke people spend money.

The first step to getting rich is to stop trying to live like a rich person.

Be wary of anyone trying to get you to attend an expensive seminar though because that is where a lot of these self-help gurus really make their money. 

I would be wary of anyone who is trying to get you to spend thousands of dollars on anything, especially a seminar. 

The fact of the matter is that sometimes we buy books based merely on a catchy title or photo. 

Marketing is BIG business, and they design the artwork to suck you in. We buy self-help books for everything from relationship issues to weight loss to addictions. 

People in the US buy approximately 13.5 million relationship self-help books every year alone.

Now I’m not saying that these products don’t work, but what I am saying is that they play on our weaknesses. 

Ask anyone you know, and they will most likely admit that they have a fully stocked library of books that they never finished reading. 

We all have good intentions, but the fact of the matter is that life often gets in the way, making us distracted before we have time to finish the book or try out the product. 

Even doctors and health care professionals are in on the game because the mental health industry is also big business. 

Everyone out there has a new book or a new method. People make big promises. 

What Should You Do Instead?


The best advice I can give you is to start slowly and watch how much money you spend. 

You might be better off taking a trip to your local library, so you can browse the self-help section spending no money at all!

There are some excellent products out there that can help you transform your life in incredible ways, and many of them work well. 

The trick is to commit to them and follow through. If you don’t read the book or never get to the exercises and get busy with life, then they probably won’t work. 

Stop and ask yourself what it is you are trying to fix. You could even meditate on it and ask your mind to tell you or show you if this product or service is right for you. 

Your mind is an incredible, untapped wealth of knowledge, and you can ask it anything you like. 

That is the real truth of the self-help industry because the fact of the matter is that you CAN help yourself, and you need not spend thousands of dollars in which to do so.

If you visit an upscale day spa, you might notice a “chakra balancing” treatment on the list of services.

You may not be sure what your chakras were, or if they needed balancing, but it’s definitely intriguing! 

Maybe you have even had your chakras dowsed with a pendulum. 

Watching a crystal spin above your heart area is interesting, and it’s not just a party trick. 

I have hands-on experience. Allow me to give you a little insight before you slap down the cash for a treatment that you don’t really know if you need. 

Your chakra system comprises seven main energy centres that live along the spinal column. 

Although they are less dense than tissue or bone, they are one of the major ways that your body receives energy from the Universal Energy Field and assimilates it for your use. 

The energy centres govern many aspects of your physiology, including organ systems and psychological tendencies, and reflect the well-being of the individual. 

Each has a frequency, a colour and a sound, moving in a clockwise direction. 

I know it’s weird to understand the nonphysical parts of you, so think of each chakra like a vortex or funnel, which is a few inches wide at the top, and the motion of this vortex pulls energy down the funnel and into the body. 

There is a front and rear aspect for each chakra, and they extend into your energy field a few inches above the body on certain points along the spinal column. 

Myth #1 - Chakras are supposed to be balanced and perfect


Many of the diagrams in books or online show the seven major chakras as they would be in an ideal world - perfect. 

They are all a similar shape, size and spin effortlessly with a colourful glow specific to each chakra. 

We live in the real world and hopefully understand that nothing is perfect. 

The real world is messy, unpredictable and above all else, constantly changing. 

This is also how your chakras behave. They are flexible and responsive, adjusting to psychological and physical factors, which affect us every day. 

Your chakras have a baseline unique to you and reflects your current emotional and physical patterns, but this baseline can change over time as you grow and change. 

Insisting that your chakras always be “perfect” is not productive in the real world. It’s important to honour where you are in your process and to encourage opening and stability, no matter how you measure up to a diagram or picture in a book. 

You are not a picture. 

When you are on a healing table and a practitioner balances your chakras, he or she is imposing a mental ideal on your very real physiology. 

They may not be respecting where you are in your process and might force your chakras to be more open than they are naturally capable of in that moment. 

After the treatment, your chakra system probably won’t be able to integrate and hold the work that they tried to impose on you. 

Your chakras will go back to where they were before the treatment and may be a little wonky for a bit. 

Myth #2 - Balancing my chakras will improve my health


It might be easy to think if my chakra system affects my organs, then I will be healthier if my chakras are perfect. 

Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. The chakras are evidence of where you are physically, emotionally and psychologically, and it is only by working on those issues that your chakras will shift and change. 

Believe me, if there were a magic switch that could make you perfect, I’d turn it on for you, but true healing requires a shift in consciousness. 

Yeah, I said it. Be intimately involved in your own healing process to reap the rewards. 

No one can do it for you. When you experience illness, it is your body calling out for you to pay attention. 

Honour it. Listen to it. The answers you need for your healing will come through your consciousness, not just your chakras. 

Get to know yourself, and you’ll move through your own health issues, rather than giving that job to someone else. 

Myth #3 - I have no power over my chakras. 


Most people think they have no real authority over their physiology. We are constantly turning to experts to tell us what is wrong with us and how to fix it. 

While there is much that a healer can do to help you understand where you are and to help you along the way, it is up to you to change the beliefs that are negatively affecting you. 

There are lots of simple exercises, similar to many common yoga postures, which people have used for centuries to shift the psychological or physiological health of an area governed by a chakra. 

Sometimes all it takes to shift a negative or unhealthy pattern is just giving it some positive attention and a concerted effort to move toward something healthier. 

For instance, if you are experiencing a sluggish second chakra and not feeling that romantic spark toward your partner, having that chakra balanced will have some effect on your love life, but not as much as if you practise something like belly dancing. 

Get that part of the body moving for yourself and your chakras will respond in kind. 

Another person can’t change your life for you, especially if you have invested behaviours and beliefs in a particular issue for many years. 

Actively working with your issues, however, will positively reflect in your entire chakra system, and you will feel better on many levels.

If something is taking you 5 hours to do, and that’s 5 hours you could spend making $200, you’d be better off paying someone $50 to do it so you could focus on tasks which bring in more income. 

2. Selective Ignorance 


How much of your time do you waste consuming information that you’ll never use? 

For example, surfing the web, reading and responding to emails, reading the news, etc. are all activities which can easily become time-wasting information addictions. 

That’s not to mention that much of the information you’re exposed to is trying to take MORE of your time (or your money) or be very negative. 

Cultivate the art of selective ignorance and see just how much more time and concentration you’ll save. 

3. Batch Processing


Set aside time blocks during which you can complete all of your tasks in batches. 

For instance, read and respond to emails between 2pm and 4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and spend the last 20 minutes of the day organising for the next day. 

Instead of multitasking, focus on one job at a time until you complete it. 

This is effective - a recent university study revealed that people being interrupted by phone calls and email scored lower than people stoned… 

Avoid this mind drain by creating time blocks for completing tasks in batches and eliminating the distractions from your life. 

4. Prioritising Your Daily Activities 


Every time that you start out your day, it’s crucial that you have your plan for it written on paper first. 

Write your daily tasks in order of priority (use the above batching process) and according to your larger long-term goals. 

This will help you keep the first things first and avoid getting bogged down in what Steven Covey calls “the thick of thin things.” 

For best results, make your priority list at the end of each day, so you’ll be fully ready before the next day even begins. 

5. Develop a Sense of Urgency 


A strong internal sense of urgency compels one person to finish a task in less than half the time that it would take someone who had no sense of urgency. 

Most people, by nature, allow a task to swell in complexity and size according to the time that they have to complete it, or they put it off and scramble to finish everything at the last minute. 

A strong sense of personal urgency will compel you to start things as soon as possible and complete them long before your deadlines. 

6. Start the Day Off Right 


How you start off the day sets the pace for the rest of the day. If you start out checking emails, organising things on your desk and taking five trips to the bathroom, you lose more and more momentum with each task that isn’t directed towards completing your “meaty” task of the day. 

Better to hit the ground running with tasks that require a lot of energy and focus. 

This will also ensure that your later tasks are easier, less dreadful, and therefore less tempting to put off until the next day. 

7. Recreational Time 


Trying to go on and on taking no time off to rest your mind and your body is a certain way to stunt your ability to concentrate and to reduce your productivity. 

Take 15-20 minutes a day for meditation to clear your mind and make sure you set one day a week aside for recreational activities.

There has been a lot of research done on laughter and its ability to heal and restore the body and the truth of the matter is that laughter has many positive benefits.

How to Meditate Like a Buddhist Monk

If you think this sounds impossible, I’m about to give you a simple formula that will prove to you it is possible if you apply it over the next few weeks.

Days 1-5: Thought Awareness 


The first step to practise effective meditation is noticing the thoughts in your mind. 

Eventually you want to control and focus your thoughts at will, but this begins with noticing the predominating thoughts in your mind. 

For the first five days, set aside 15 to 20 minutes a day to sit with your legs crossed on the ground and just pay attention to the thoughts that randomly come into your mind. 

Don’t try to change them or force them in any direction. 

Don’t analyse them and don’t think about whether you should be thinking of them. 

Again, this is an exercise in raising your awareness of your thought process. 

As you are doing this, keep your eyes closed and make sure you have nothing distracting you during the 15 or 20 minutes. 

At the end of the five days, move immediately to this next step: 

Days 6-15: Inducing the Trance State


For days 6 to 15, you will practise keeping your mind and body in what’s called the “hypnagogic state,” which is the deep meditative state between sleeping and dreaming. 

Lie down flat on your back somewhere comfortable and bend your arms at the elbows so that your forearms are at a 90-degree angle to your torso. 

This way, as soon as you doze off to sleep, your arms will fall and awaken you, keeping you suspended in the hypnagogic state. 

As you are doing this, pay attention to when your body is about to fall asleep, because the goal of meditation is to put yourself in this state and stay there at will. 

You’ll also find that random thoughts will come into your mind during this time; again, don’t worry about those just yet. 

During these 10 days, you’ll be learning how to suspend yourself between sleeping and dreaming. 

You might also experience “sleep paralysis” around the end of these 10 days. 

Sleep paralysis can be scary and sometimes accompanied by hallucinations ... just know that this is normal and don’t be afraid of it. 

Days 16-25: Thought Maintenance 


Some Buddhist monks refer to thought maintenance as “tending the garden of your mind.” 

What you will do is start acknowledging the random thoughts that are popping into your head by addressing them out loud. 

For example: “I am thinking about what I had for lunch.” “I am thinking about a blue sports car.” “I am thinking about what happened today at work.” “I am thinking about my dog barking.” 

What you’ll notice is that after enough practice doing this, acknowledging your thoughts will cause them to disappear from your consciousness. 

As soon as a new one comes, address it and wait patiently for the next one. 

Days 26-30: Deep Meditation 


During the last five days, you ought to notice a stillness in your thoughts and a peace within your mind and body. 

Remaining within this state for your entire meditation time will help you reap the benefits of meditation. 

If you notice thoughts coming into your head, go address them as you did during days 16 to 25, and eventually your mind will become still. 

TIP: Once your 30 days are up, make it a lifetime practice to meditate for 15 to 30 minutes a day. 

This kind of meditation will bring health benefits that will increase your lifespan and help you gain greater self-control, concentration, and inner peace.

Let Go of the Guilt for Good
Do you ever get that guilty or “bad” feeling when you want to do something for yourself?

If so, you might realise that this feeling is keeping you from having more of what you want - or even from enjoying your life.

Well, thankfully you don’t have to suffer with this guilty feeling every time that you try to get ahead or to help yourself.

All you have to do is understand where the feeling comes from and what you can do to get rid of it.

The Root of Guilty Feelings 


There are two kinds of guilty feelings: valid ones and invalid ones.

Valid guilty feelings are those you get when you do something that you know is out of alignment with your personal values.

Believe it or not, these kinds of guilty feelings are your best friends. They remind you you need to change your behaviour, and as long as you respond positively to them, they’ll pass quickly.

For example, if you’re teaching people that borrowing money isn’t a good idea, and that debt keeps people broke, but you’re running up credit cards, you will feel guilty until one of two things happens:

1. You are honest with yourself about the fact that you DO believe in debt, or, 


2. You line up your actions with your behaviour. 


Otherwise, you’ll go on feeling guilty because your actions are contradicting your personal values.

The problem is that the longer you go on this way, the more desensitised you get to guilt.

As a result, your level of self-trust breaks down. Before you try to get rid of guilty feelings, it’s a good idea to determine whether it’s valid guilt or invalid guilt.

If it’s valid, use it as motivation to align your behaviours with your true values. But sometimes the guilty feelings occur because other people are “making” you feel that way.

Your behaviours are out of alignment with *their* values.

They attempt to change your behaviours by convincing you you’re “selfish” for doing things for yourself or that you’re “irresponsible” because you aren’t living your life according to the same rules that they do.

The more you’re exposed to these kinds of people, the more you internalise the belief that they’re right when they say that you’re “selfish” or “irresponsible,” or whatever else they call you when they disapprove of how you’re acting.

Curing the Invalid Guilty Feeling 


The cure for invalid guilty feelings is to realise that you’re not responsible for other people’s values, perceptions, and opinions.

You can’t “make” anyone mad or sad or disappointed in you; those are all things which are their responsibility and not yours.

The more you make yourself responsible for these things, the harder a time you’ll have of letting go of the invalid guilty feelings.

No one may tell you how to live your life or to make assumptions about what kind of person you are just because they don’t approve of your actions.

Make a commitment to live your life as you see fit and let other people deal with whether or not they like it, it’s not your problem.

Is It Really Me?


So make it a point to analyse your guilty feelings and ask yourself if they’re because of your own values or someone else’s.

If they’re because of yours, you know that you need to change.

If they’re because of someone else’s values, let that be their problem.

TIP: The guilty feelings will persist for a while even when you’re practicing the above strategy, but that’s just because the feelings take a while to catch up with changing your habits.

Be persistent, and the feelings will eventually catch up.

I just want to mention a cool form of hypnosis that allows you to control your mind - and the minds of others.
