Have you heard the hit single ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ by Bobby McFerrin? I think most people have.

The song has a catchy way of conveying its message to be happy. He had a point, though.

Living a happy and optimistic life is good for your health. Being happy protects you from life’s stresses. Stress causes illness, like heart disease, cancer and strokes.

Time to keep those at bay!

Change is Inevitable

People can resist change. It’s understandable, as it can induce anxiety. However change happens, there is only change in this universe. Nothing stays the same.

The only thing in life that will always remain the same is change. We are fortunate, though: we also have the power to make changes and have the knowledge that scenarios change too.

Even if we find ourselves in an unbearable situation, we can always find solace knowing that it, too, can change.

To be happy is relatively simple then: just decide to be happy! That’s the change in us necessary for the transformation.

Abraham Lincoln observed that most people choose how happy they want to be. The choice is really that simple. Choose to be happy.

Need Some Help In Choosing to be Happy?

For a start, here are 10 tips to help you be happy in life.

Be Grateful

There is much to be thankful for. Thank the taxi driver for bringing you home safely. Give thanks for a wonderful dinner. Thank the guy who cleans your windows.

Thank the postal worker for bringing you your mail. Thank the police officer for making your place safe. Give thanks for having a bed to sleep in tonight.

Watch Less News

Some people can’t start their day without their daily dose of news. 99% of the news we hear or read is bad news. It sells better, that’s why.

Starting the day with bad news isn’t a sensible thing to do. Drop it from your daily schedule.

Cultivate a Spiritual or Religious Connection

Being part of a religious group with its singing, sacraments, chanting, prayers and meditations foster inner peace. If you're not the religious type, attending to your spiritual health does the same.

Manage Your Time

Time is invaluable and is too important to waste. Prioritise what’s important to you and junk the rest.

Learn to say no.

Laugh

Heard a good joke lately? Tell it to your friends or family.

Stop being serious all the time. Behave in a childlike manner from time to time.

As they say, “laughter is the best medicine”.

Express Your Feelings

Show affection to the people you love. They will probably reciprocate it.

Try not to keep pent up anger or frustrations. This is bad for your health.

Instead, find ways of expressing them healthily that will not cause injury or hurt to anyone.

Work For Personal Satisfaction

Working gives us a sense of purpose. Accomplishments are necessary for all of us.

It doesn’t just mean the work you do for money. Work on the things that you feel are worthy of your time.

Learn

Try to learn something new every day. Learning expands our horizons.

It could also give you more opportunities in the future.

Exercise to Feel Alive

Run, walk, dance. Whatever. Just get your body moving briskly.

Do it often, preferably outdoors.

Improve Your Relationships

Social networks and relationships are essential to happiness. Cultivate the relationships you have with the people you love.

Create new connections.

These are a few simple things you can do every day to be happy.

I mentioned Abraham Lincoln above. He said, “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

Couldn’t agree more! Smell the flowers while you can.
