We’ve all heard the quote that laughter is the best medicine, but what does it mean? 

There has been a lot of research done on laughter and its ability to heal and restore the body and the truth of the matter is that laughter has many positive benefits. Laughter is nature’s own pain reliever, and it may, in fact, be much more effective than any drug you could ever purchase. 

Laughter can be a great stress-reliever and a pain reliever, and it is not just for fun because laughter can even enhance creativity and increase innovation. Laughter releases those powerful endorphins, and they not only make you happier, they can also heal your body. 

Norman Cousins, who wrote a book called “The Anatomy of an Illness,” developed a condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis. The doctors estimated that Norman’s chance of survival was approximately 1 in 500, so not very good. 

The story has it that Norman laughed his way back to health, which is both amazing and fascinating. Norman took massive doses of vitamin C and dismissed himself from the hospital. 

He then got an old-fashioned movie projector and a good supply of funny films. The very first night he began watching the films, he could reduce his pain significantly and found he could sleep for several hours completely pain-free. 

He continued this work for several weeks until finally he overcame his affliction. This is an incredible demonstration of the power of laughter, and it should be an inspiration to us all. 

Whether this is the placebo effect, it does not really matter because it worked. Norman lived another 26 years until he died at 78 from heart failure. 

It's Not Just Laughter Either


Meditation works similarly in activating a part of the brain in charge of the autonomic nervous system, which controls the body’s functions, such as blood pressure and digestion. 

Stress impacts and even compromises these same types of functions, so taking time to modulate these functions can naturally ward off stress-related conditions, such as heart disease, digestive problems and things like infertility. 

Practices like visualisation and even hypnotherapy work in much the same manner, helping one tap into the alpha brainwave frequency, which can help your body heal. 

You could literally visualise your way to good health by taking time every day to picture yourself enjoying good health.

You could take it a step farther and visualise healthy, pink lungs and healthy tissue. You could also visualise tiny little creatures eating away at your disease, helping your body’s immune system heal. 

The brain is a highly efficient system that connects to every single cell in your body. When you visualise or even laugh, your brain releases powerful healing endorphins, and there is no limit to the magic it can create. 

The best way to help yourself heal is to hold positive thoughts in your mind. Whether you do this with laughter or with visualisations or even with self-hypnosis does not really matter. 

What matters is that you believe with every fibre of your being that you can help your body heal. When you believe that, you will laugh your way to optimal health and wellness!
